Dave C. Johnson
Dave Johnson founded West Avenue Associates, LLC following his retirement from the University of Richmond in 2007. The firm specializes in providing counsel to the leadership of nonprofit organizations of all types. An experienced consultant, Dave recently served as Senior Vice President of Grenzebach Glier & Associates (GG+A) an international philanthropic management consulting firm based in Chicago. During his tenure with GG+A, Dave was counsel to the University of Southern California (USC), the University of California, Irvine, the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Foundation, the Museum of the Confederacy, Scenic Virginia Foundation, Providence College, Virginia Union University, Randolph College and Yale University. Dave brings 35 years of experience at both public and private institutions. In addition to the University of Richmond, he held senior positions at Harvard University, Harvard Law School, the University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate Business School, Cornell University and Lafayette College. At the Darden School, Dave taught communications and organizational behavior in the MBA program. He has managed six fundraising campaigns which collectively secured more than $3.6 billion in philanthropic support. In addition, Dave serves as a faculty consultant to the Association of Governing Boards (AGB).
A noted authority on many aspects of institutional development, Dave has presented at many national conferences including the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the Virginia Fundraising Institute (VFRI), the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the Ivy-MIT-Stanford Development Council and the Duke University Development Summit. He is the founding editor ofExecutive Summary, a semi-annual presidential report to leadership alumni of Harvard University and co-author of The University-Industry Relationship in Perspective, commissioned by the Board of Trustees of Cornell University.
Dave is a graduate of DePauw University (IN), the Darden Graduate Business School at UVa and completed advanced degree work at Cornell University. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Association of Fundraising Executives (VAFRE) and is a member of St. James’s Episcopal Church, the Harvard Club of New York, the Commonwealth Club and Willow Oaks Country Club.
